Clinical Waste: Cytotoxic / Cytostatic

ct25028Department of Health regulations and guidance (07-01: Safe Management of Healthcare Waste) require healthcare facilities that produce cytotoxic and/or cytostatic waste to ensure that suitable receptacles are available for this waste stream. Cytotoxic and cytostatic waste must be segregated from other clinical and non-clinical waste streams.

Cytotoxic and cytostatic medicines are products possessing any one or more of the hazardous properties:

  • H6: Toxic
  • H7: Carcinogenic
  • H10: Toxic for reproduction
  • H11: Mutagenic

The internationally recognised packaging for cytotoxic and cytostatic waste is yellow waste bags with purple print. Bags should have no greater than 5KG maximum contents weight.

Although not a legal requirement it is considered best practice to segregate cytotoxic and cytostatic medicines from other medicines and many waste contractors request this as not all incinerators are authorised for cytotoxic and cytostatic medicines. The indicative treatment and disposal required is incineration at a suitably permitted or licensed facility.

GV Health cytotoxic waste bags meet all UN, UK Department of Health and NHS requirements and are used extensively throughout the NHS. The bags include a secure sealing system to minimise the risk of spillages during handling. There is a panel for adding further information such as EWC codes and source data.
