Kings Fund Reports Infection lower in UK

A new report from the King's Fund shows substantial falls in MRSA and c.difficile infections in the UK. The report entitled ‘How is the NHS Performing?' is a regular quarterly review of selected NHS performance measures with views from a panel of NHS finance directors on the key issues their organisations are facing.

Of particular note are the report's findings regarding infection levels of C. Difficile and MRSA in NHS hospitals. Monthly counts of C. Difficile infection have fallen substantially from nearly 2,400 cases in mid-2008 to 711 in February 2011, a reduction of over 70%. There are now around 11,000 cases of C. Difficile per annum, down from nearly 20,000 in 2008.

The downward trend continues with MRSA infections where the monthly count of 175 cases in mid-2008 has fallen to 46 in February 2011, a reduction of 75%. There are now around 710 cases of MRSA annually in the UK.
